Description:

The action takes place in the 1940s, during the Japan-China War. The Academy of Laughter is a play written in the comedy genre, portraying the conflict between the "bureaucratic world" and the creative individual.

 

The play features two main characters: a bureaucrat and a playwright, both defending their work and their principles. Gradually, these two characters, seemingly opposites, become friends and allies.

Koki Mitani – playwright

 

Koki Mitani is a contemporary Japanese playwright, screenwriter, and director. In 1961, he graduated from the Department of Theatre at the Faculty of Arts, Nihon University.

 

While still a student, he founded a theatre troupe called "Tokyo Merry Boys" with his friends. Their performances became very popular in Japan and were also appreciated by critics for their unique comedic productions. Koki Mitani writes plays, scripts, stages productions, and directs films. The Academy of Laughter (the play on which the production Zolo is based) was originally written for radio and later adapted for the stage. Today, the play is performed in theaters around the world and enjoys great popularity.
