“Voices from Chernobyl”
“Two catastrophes coincided: a cosmic one — Chernobyl — and a social one, when an enormous socialist continent sank beneath the waters. The second collapse overshadowed the cosmic catastrophe because it was closer to us and easier to understand. What happened in Chernobyl had never happened on Earth before, and we are the first people to have experienced it.”
Svetlana Alexievich
Voices from Chernobyl, staged at the Griboedov Theatre, is a tragic narrative about how “a small life is so vulnerable in the vastness of time.”
Like the author of the book, the creators of the performance listen attentively to those who took part in and witnessed the catastrophe: firefighters, liquidators, doctors, and ordinary citizens. Their testimonies, brought from the pages of the book onto the stage, are an attempt to understand the causes of the Chernobyl tragedy and reflect on its consequences, both human and social.
