About the play
Galaktion Khosolian is worried about his neighbor Bakula’s pigs, which occasionally destroy his garden and leave his family with nothing to eat. Suddenly, Galaktion remembers his wife’s cousin, Sasha, who works at the regional administration, and an idea sparks in his mind. He plans to invite the “officials” to his house and serve them at a table specially prepared for them. The poor peasant hopes that the neighbor will be intimidated by the sight of his friends and acquaintances, and that the pigs will run away. Will this plan work? Are the pigs the real problem, or are the people who resemble pigs?
Davit Kldiashvili’s story depicts how harsh and cruel daily life was in the Soviet Union. It asks: “How can a person survive in such a vile and broken environment alongside officials whose misdeeds always go unpunished?” These questions arise rhetorically in the text, giving it the depth of a true work of critical realism.
