Description:
William Shakespeare’s renowned tragedy is presented in an unusual version — a blend of puppet and live-action theatre. The performance is a single act with a duration of 60 minutes. The Tbilisi premiere of “Othello” took place in October 2022 and was dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Kote Marjanishvili and the 115th anniversary of Petre Otskheli. The puppets and set designs were created based on Petre Otskheli’s sketches, which he prepared nearly a century ago for Kote Marjanishvili’s “Othello.”
“… All the actors deliver their roles impressively; additionally, the audience is shown what emotional depth can be achieved on stage through the use of puppets and objects. The emotion of these 'miniature' actors is extremely contagious. They further highlight the metaphorical foundations of Shakespeare’s play. The puppet-based "Othello" sheds new light on the dramatic characters and the fateful plot of the play… The theatre still has the power to make a significant impact on the audience. Puppets and actors harmoniously blend together. "Othello" is an astonishing, creative, extremely bold, and intelligent interpretation of the play,” says Egyptian playwright Isra Mahboub.
