Kakhidze Music Center

The Tbilisi Music and Cultural Center is one of Georgia’s leading concert organizations, dedicated for many years to preserving and developing the country’s rich musical traditions.
 

The Tbilisi Music and Cultural Center was founded in 1989. The idea for its creation emerged in 1976 and belonged to the renowned Georgian conductor and public figure, Jansugh Kakhidze. At that time, Tbilisi practically lacked a hall that met all the requirements for performing symphonic music. This made it necessary to build a full-fledged concert venue suitable for symphonic performances, which was an extremely difficult task during the Soviet era.
 

In order to overcome the obstacles with relatively less difficulty, a solution was found: the “Amirani” cinema on Davit Aghmashenebeli (then Plekhanov) Avenue and the Small Hall of the Philharmonic on Merab Kostava (then Lenin) Street exchanged locations. Afterward, the reconstruction of the former cinema building began.
 

Thanks to the resolution of numerous problems, the tireless efforts of Maestro Kakhidze, and the strong support of progressively minded figures in government, a new concert hall meeting modern standards was added to the historic foyer of the old building. The architectural design of the hall was created by Leri Medzmariashvili and Murtaz Chachanidze.
